The One Day Film School, a mainstay of many top UK schools for over a decade, is now available as a team-building activities for companies. Guided by short video lessons, teams work collaboratively (in person or remotely) using their own devices to create short films which can be screened at Oscars-style black tie events, with expert judging, nominees, red carpets and award-giving.
It couldn’t be easier to run: once teams have been organised (5-10 people), they’ll log in and watch video lessons for just 20 minutes. Having covered the essentials, they’ll take the 10 Shot Challenge and create a two minute short film – as director, camera person, screenwriter or actors. Don’t want to speak on camera? No-one needs to, because their films will be silent… with music.
Remote-working teams will film a clip or two each then share with the rest of the team for editing (which we’ll show you how to do). As a team-building exercise it’s a great way to create lasting bonds, as everyone will have a shared memory, and enables collaboration between colleagues in different cities, countries… continents!

It’s an online course, based on the popular filmmaking course run in top UK schools by Young Film Academy since 2004. Now a team-building activity for companies, it enables anyone to make a short films to professional standard.
Minimum team size is 5, or there won’t be enough to make a film. Maximum number is unlimited. Recommended team size is 5-10.
The video lessons are 20 minutes long. The minimum recommended time for filming & editing is 1hr 45mins, though can fill a whole day (or longer) if props, costumes and locations are used.
Each team needs a device (smartphone or tablet) to film & edit. Remote-working teams will each need a device to film a 1-2 clips for sharing with the rest of the group. The easiest way to share clips is via a WhatsApp group. Recommended edit software is iMovie (Apple Store, free). Android users need to download PowerDirector (Google Play Store, also free).
5 classic narratives are supplied, eg ‘Someone is kidnapped, an attempted rescue’. The actual plot lines are devised by each team. Films can be any genre (comedy, horror, thriller, action, drama etc).
A Young Film Academy expert can view films, give feedback, nominate in different categories, decide award winners and supply engraved statuettes. Please note: this is an additional service.

CASE STUDY
Telum Media – Asia, Australia and New Zealand’s leading media intelligence platform – used the One Day Film School as a way to connect 100 colleagues around the world who wouldn’t normally all interact. Their films were screened at the inaugural Telum Oscars in December 2020.

How would you rate your expectations prior to doing this as a company activity?
I was a bit daunted by the perceived complexity of the activity, rather than the actual content itself.
How satisfied were you with how it went?
It went genuinely very well. The video lessons were easy to understand and straightforward. The concept itself was pretty straightforward, too. Having the films judged by an expert brought a real benefit and attendees were genuinely excited.
How likely are you to recommend it to other companies?
I think this concept would work well for many organisations, particularly for naturally creative industries – media, comms, marketing etc – as well as those B2C firms who have to be naturally excitable and upbeat in their day-to-day activities.
How would you describe feedback across the firm? Can you summarise the experience from a staff perspective?
Feedback was overwhelmingly positive from all quarters. Once people understood the concept and the simplicity of the task, almost all of them got involved and were excited about it. People loved having their films judged by an expert, and all wanted to view all the films afterwards, along with the commentary notes from the expert.
Can you share any details about the Telum Oscars?
We divided people into 10 teams of 10 and ensured a good mix to help make sure things kept flowing. We made a dedicated Slack channel for each team to answer any questions and keep an eye on workflow. Once the first teams started coalescing around their ideas, it was easier to nudge slower teams along. Most filming took place over a weekend. All films were submitted successfully 24 hours before our Christmas party to allow for judging. The online event took place with all teams joining from around the world via Zoom. We then screened each film and allowed time after each for a bit of chat from around the company. At the end we read out the commendations and the Best Picture Oscar winner.
